Ecommerce has slowly gained popularity over the years; however, the pandemic’s onset has exacerbated it significantly. Owed to the lockdown imposed due to Covid-19, our lives have altered and shifted mostly to the digital landscape.

Most of the tasks that we used to perform physically are now being carried out online, such as paying bills, taking courses, conducting research, and shopping. With more and more consumers indulging in online shopping, owning and optimizing an e-commerce business has never before been so important! And profitable, of course.

Popularity of E-commerce

Owning an e-commerce store not only boosts your income but also provides you with an alternate stream of revenue, equipping you to deal with unprecedented situations such as the one we are currently in.

It also enhances your business by enabling you to target a significantly larger consumer base than a storefront can.

A study conducted by Entrepreneur revealed that online shopping is likely to increase dramatically, with 56% of Gen Xers and 67% of millennials in the US being the most likely demographics to indulge in online shopping.

It would be beneficial for you to begin building an in-depth understanding of the workings of e-commerce as soon as you can because studies show that it grew by  300% over the last few years, with revenue of $700 billion in the US just last year.

Furthermore, e-commerce will make up 17.5% of global retail sales by 2021, up from 7.4% in 2015.

Still, underestimating the potential of an e-commerce store? We hope not!

Creating an E-commerce Store with WooCommerce

This article will explain the steps to create an e-commerce store with WooCommerce, a WordPress plugin.

WordPress is an increasingly popular content management system across the globe. Research reveals that WordPress currently powers over  37.5%  of all the websites on the internet.

WooCommerce is a commonly used WordPress plugin that essentially converts your WordPress website into an e-commerce store.

Why use WordPress and WooCommerce?

Both WordPress and WooCommerce are primarily open-source and are developed actively, with enormous support and community backing them. Therefore, the platform and the plugin are the right, convenient choice for beginners and web development experts.

Now that we have covered the basics let us start creating an e-commerce store and opening doors to boundless profit!

Here is the step-by-step guide:

1 – Choose Domain and Hosting

Before attempting to create a WooCommerce store, you first need to choose a domain name and a web hosting account. A domain name basically refers to the address of your website. For example, accuratedigitalsolutions.com is the domain of this particular website.

Web hosting, on the other hand, refers to the storage space of your website on the internet. A space where the resources and files of your website are stored.

When a consumer enters your website domain into their browser, the hosting server will make your website available by delivering the site files to the user.

We can therefore say that a domain name and a hosting account are the building blocks of any kind of website.

2 – WordPress Installation

Now that you have the building blocks for your website, it is time to actually start building it. As the first step, you can install the free WordPress software platform. Most hosting brands do provide the option for one-click installation; however, in case your hosting company has no such option, you can easily download the platform from WordPress.org

3 – WooCommerce Activation

Now that you have your website ready to go, it is time to head over to the star of the show! With the activation of WooCommerce, you can install ecommerce functionality.

There are three ways to go about this:

1 – You can create a free account on WooCommerce.com

With this option, you will need to sign up for an account on WooCommerce.com as well as WordPress.com. You then have the option to choose from auto-installation of WooCommerce or downloading the zip file to do so yourself. You could also opt for a pre-installed solution with a trusted host.

2 – You can download the WooCommerce plugin

If you go for this option, you first need to download the plugin. Then you will need to open your website and go to Dashboard > Plugins> Add New > Upload. You will then have to select the plugin that you downloaded and click install, and the activate.

3 – You can search for the plugin within your site

In case of this option, you will need to open your website and go to Dashboard > Plugins > Add New > Search Plugins and then type in “WooCommerce” in the search option. Once it appears, you can click on install and then activate.

Once the plugin is activated, a Setup Wizard will appear on your screen and will help take you through the initial setup.

4 – Choose a Theme

The Setup Wizard will ask you to choose a particular theme. The theme you pick will determine the layout and general look of your ecommerce store, so be sure to pick one that is relevant and can provide a good user experience. You do have the option to customize the theme you choose, so be creative!

You can choose to go for a free theme included in WordPress or you could even buy a premium theme that suits your requirements.

5 – WooCommerce Extensions

Once you have created your ecommerce store and uploaded the products/ services according to the theme, you can then add further functionality by using WooCommerce extensions.

A good option may be to start your store for free and then scale it up with extensions as your consumer base expands and your revenue flows in.

To Conclude

It must have an immaculate online presence for a business to grow and reach customers in this day and age. You need to engage consumers, increase conversions, increase sales, and diversify your income streams, all of which require you to enhance your online presence and brand image.
