Optimize images

Photos account for most of the loading time. Make sure your visitor does not use a large image that can only be used as a thumbnail. A correctly set up website that uses a CMS can do this itself. 

However, if it does not, there are many free resources available that you can use to customize your photos before uploading them to the site (JPEGmini, Smush.it, etc.).

Automate speed improvement

Set up as many automatic performance improvements as you can. If you are using a CMS, add a plugin that will mask parts of your site so that visitors don’t need to download something more than once. 

WP Super Cache or W3 Max Cache is perfect when you use WordPress. Such plugins can also reduce and compress files, make file sizes substantially smaller, and allow users to search your site more quickly.

Avoid common stock photos

It’s inadvisable using the same worn out stock images users find all over the internet. Try using your own unique images whenever possible but if you are going to use stock photos, make sure they’re unique. The run off the mill stock photos depreciate your website value and diminish user experience.

When you’re looking for a photo to use on your “Contact Us” tab, try a picture of your team instead of using the same generic photo of a woman wearing a headset that one of your rivals uses.

Protect your brand

So you ran an A / B test and found that the Garish Neon Green button converts better than the On-brand Blue accent regularly used on your web. One percent increase in user conversions is worth it.

A / B testing is fantastic, but bear in mind that design affects more than what people click on — it affects how they think about your product.

Be transparent

Find a way to say what your company is doing in a straightforward, simple sentence, and lead with that. 

There are times and places for mystery and suspense, but it’s not the main headline of a company website.

Visitors do not have to read the entire site to see what your company is doing; they should be able to grasp what you’re doing within a few seconds of landing on your homepage.

A few well-written pages would be much more successful than thousands of over written pages.

A Well-placed call-to-action

Studies have shown that the call-to-action button works best at the point on the page where the user often finds the details they need. 

Instead of plastering on-site calls and blasting users at every turn, take a more cautious approach and place the button at the stage where the visitor is prepared to make a decision.

We sometimes get so wrapped up in ensuring that our websites appear in the appropriate searches, we overlook the importance of an engaging customer experience.
